How do I apply H010 labels to my products?

Modified on Mon, 9 Mar at 10:04 AM

H010 labels are holographic. The optical effect that makes authentication work depends on the label being flat, clean, and properly adhered. A label that has lifted, wrinkled, or been applied to the wrong surface can cause scan failures.

Prepare the surface first

Before applying a label, the surface needs to be:

  • Clean and dry. Dust, oil, or moisture stops the adhesive from bonding properly.
  • Smooth. Textured or uneven surfaces cause the label to wrinkle, which distorts the holographic channels and can make the second QR code difficult to read.
  • Stable. Avoid applying labels to surfaces that flex, compress, or expand under normal use.

Applying the label

Peel the label from its backing carefully. Avoid touching the adhesive side. Position the label before pressing it down. Repositioning after contact will destroy the label. Press firmly from the centre outward to push out any air. Apply even pressure across the full label area. Don't use tools with sharp edges.

Surfaces that work well

  • Glass (bottles, jars)
  • Smooth rigid plastic (product casings, packaging)
  • Coated card and paperboard (premium boxes)
  • Metal (tins, aluminium)

Surfaces to avoid

  • Rough or porous materials, such as uncoated card, fabric, or bare wood
  • Surfaces that get wet regularly, as the label will eventually lift at the edges
  • Tight curves with a radius smaller than approximately 20mm, as the label will wrinkle at the edges
  • Surfaces near heat sources, which can affect both the adhesive and the holographic layer over time

Check the label after applying

After applying, tilt the label slowly under a light source. You should see the holographic effect shift as the angle changes, and both QR codes should be visible at different tilt positions.

If the effect looks flat, the label may be damaged or partially lifted. If you scan a freshly applied label and get a failure result, check the surface is flat, press the label down firmly, and try again.

A label that authenticates correctly on your own phone before shipping confirms it's properly applied and registered to your campaign.

Storing unused labels

Store unused labels flat, away from direct sunlight and heat. Damp storage or exposure to heat can degrade labels before they're applied.
